The government decided to appoint a new board of managers from the public and private sector.For four decades KETHEA was self-governed. Therapeutic community members, parents, staff and volunteers had the right to vote and elect their own management board.
Self-governance is important for the democratic functioning of the therapeutic communities and the proper management of the organization. The elected KETHEA board is accountable to its electoral body and the Greek society.
The appointment of a board by the government is a direct political intervention at KETHEA. The government claims that they are right by going negative and condemning KETHEA for mismanagement and problematic functioning.The bureaucratic governmental policy and the appointment of managers from the private and public sector is against the main principles of self-governance on which, therapeutic communities base their operation.
The government forbids community members, parents, staff and volunteers to vote, diminishes the value of the drug free programmes and sets obstacles to the social integration of therapeutic community members.
